At Heavenly Au Pairs we recommend that you attend a language school.
It is particularly good to attend one in the first months, to help you settle in and find friends. It is not necessary to attend one for a entire year.
The main benefits of a language school are to support your learning of English whilst you are in the country and, no less important, to meet friends!
It is also simply good to have a 2nd focus, outside of the house and your host family.
How to choose your language school?
First, identify which language schools are closest to you, or take the least time to travel to. This means less travelling time and expense, but also you will meet friends who also live in your area.
Find out how much a term of lessons costs, and what the minimum number of lessons per week is – you can’t attend full time! Ask if they can offer a discount for au pairs.
Find out which type of English courses they run and crucially what internationally recognised exams you could take at the end of the course.
Once you have narrowed the selection down to 2 or 3, go and see them.
You will need to take an assessment test, which is quite painless! The school will then inform you of which level they would place you in and what times those lessons take place.
You may then decide which school offers you the most convenient times.
Also speak to some current or past students, what did they think of the language school?
A good school will normally also offer some social events for the students throughout the year, so look out for those.
Larger schools offer a better variety of class times, morning, afternoon, evenings and weekends, however, smaller schools can exude more of a ‘family’ atmosphere.
Heavenly Au Pairs helps their au pairs to find a suitable school.
